Scaling and Root Planing Post Operative Instructions

Scaling and Root Planing therapy involves removing bacterial plaque and tartar from the root surface below the gum line. This reduces inflammation/infection and allows re-attachment of the gums to the root surface. The depth of the periodontal pockets is reduced thus allowing more efficient flossing and brushing.

For the First 24-48 Hours:

  • Do not eat or drink hot foods until the effect of anesthetic wears off
  • No vigorous physical exercise
  • Do not use a straw or sucking motion.
  • Do not smoke or consume alcoholic beverages for at least 48 hours, this will delay healing significantly.
  • Do not eat food that is extreme in temperature, spicy or can become sharp/lodged into the gums, ie: chips or popcorn.
  • Rinse with a 50/50 Hydrogen Peroxide and water mouth rinse, for at least 30 seconds twice daily. Resume your normal homecare regimen immediately. It is imperative to maintain proper homecare as instructed.
  • Dental sensitivity after treatment is normal. Using desensitizing toothpastes (sensodyne) is recommended. Avoid whitening pastes, or those containing baking soda.
  • Over the counter medication, such as Ibuprofen (Motrin), Naproxen (Aleve) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is recommended every 4-6 hours as needed.

Pulpotomy Post Operative Instructions

  • Do not eat or drink hot liquids until the anesthetic has worn off and you are no longer numb.
  • Following the procedure, your gums may feel tender. The anesthetic injection site may also feel sore. Over the counter medication, such as Ibuprofen (Motrin), Naproxen (Aleve) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is recommended every 4-6 hours as needed. If prescribed medication by Dr. Tang, please take as directed until gone.
  • You will need to return to the office to complete the procedure in as early as 24 hours, but no longer than 2 weeks, to prevent re-infection.
  • Rinse daily with 3% Hydrogen Peroxide diluted with water up to 1 week minimum.

It is normal to experience some sensitivity to cold, hot, and pressure following the procedure. These symptoms will lessen within a few days to a few weeks. As long as the sensitivity continues to decrease, there is no need for concern

Dental Restorative (Tooth Filling) Post Operative Instructions

  • Do not eat or drink hot liquids until the anesthetic has worn off and you are no longer numb.
  • The filling is already set to its maximum strength. You can eat, brush, drink, floss and rinse as soon as you are no longer numb. Avoid flossing the area where a bandage may have been placed.
  • For restorations placed on anterior (front) teeth. Use extreme caution when biting into hard or firm foods as this can disrupt the bond and cause the repair to break.
Tang, please take all medication as directed until gone.
