A patient with straight teethThere are several factors that play a role in the appearance of a beautiful smile. Straight, uniform teeth is certainly one of those factors. Unfortunately, there are many patients that require treatment to address tooth alignment issues. One dental issue that can affect tooth alignment is a twisted tooth. A twisted tooth refers to any tooth that is turned inward or outward. This condition can make the twisted tooth appear discolored, and make the teeth appear crooked.

At the practice of Thomas Tang, DDS, we offer a range of cosmetic dentistry treatments to improve the appearance of the smile. If you wish to undergo treatment for a twisted tooth, we invite you to schedule a consultation at our Brookfield, WI practice. Dr. Tang will examine your teeth to determine which treatments are best suited to your needs.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers may be recommended when a tooth is moderately twisted. However, it is important that patients understand that this treatment doesn’t correct the alignment of the affected tooth. Instead, some degree of the tooth’s structure will be removed so that a veneer can be applied, making it appear as though the tooth is front facing and sitting flush with surrounding teeth.

Your candidacy for this treatment will depend on how severely the tooth is twisted. If we can remove a small amount of the tooth’s structure, leaving enough of the tooth intact to support a veneer, Dr. Tang may recommend this course of treatment. If a significant amount of the tooth’s structure would need to be removed to accommodate the veneer, an orthodontic treatment will be recommended.

The benefit of porcelain veneers treatment is that the entire process can be completed in just two dental appointments, usually within a span of two weeks. This is the quickest treatment option, making it desirable to some patients.

Invisalign®

Invisalign® is a discreet orthodontic system that corrects the alignment of a moderately twisted tooth. Many patients prefer this option because it permanently brings the tooth into proper alignment and avoids the need for the removal of any healthy tooth structure.

Invisalign involves the use of clear aligners trays that gradually move the teeth into their desired positions. The trays can be removed when eating and cleaning the teeth. However, they must be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day for treatment to be effective.

Braces

If the patient has a severely twisted tooth or other alignment problems, porcelain veneers and Invisalign may not be suitable treatment options. In these cases, braces are required to correct the position of the teeth. This bracket and wire system is extremely effective in producing the straight teeth that patients desire. Of course, the downside is their appearance.

To speed along the orthodontic braces process, patients should follow all of their doctor’s instructions and attend all scheduled appointments. Avoiding the use of rubber bands or skipping tightening appointments will prolong the amount of time in which you need to wear your braces.
